Honda Revives its Experimental HP-X Car After 40 Years in a Spectacular Fashion

Honda is gearing up to unveil its experimental HP-X car, which first appeared in 1984, at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

This car is considered the brand's first modern prototype, designed by Pininfarina, and made its debut at the Turin Auto Show, where it impressed everyone with its radical and dynamic design.

The HP-X features a 2.0-liter V-6 engine derived from Honda's Formula 2 race cars and is constructed from Kevlar and carbon fiber to ensure a lightweight build. It was also one of the first cars to utilize "ground effects" and was equipped with driver-controlled air brakes. Although it never reached production, it paved the way for the NSX car, which appeared five years later.

This year, the HP-X will return to the spotlight at Pebble Beach, becoming the first Japanese car to compete in the main category in over 50 years. It will compete in the "Concepts and Prototypes" category, highlighting its significance in automotive history.

During the restoration process, Honda ensured to maintain the car's authenticity as much as possible. The car retains its original white and dark blue paint with red accents, along with the interior made of red and white suede. The original design featured an acrylic Perspex canopy with a fighter jet-inspired opening, which is still present in the restored version.

Dave Marek, the Executive Director of Acura Design, stated, "The Honda HP-X concept was the star of the 1984 Turin Auto Show, showcasing elements of engineering excellence and advanced design. Its bold design continues to inspire future generations of car designers and engineers."

Marek added, "The forward-thinking HP-X had an undeniable impact on the industry, highlighting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in car design."

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2024, where the fully restored Honda HP-X will compete in the main events of the show.
