The government plans to implement the time-of-use electricity tariff starting from July 1st, making it mandatory for specific sectors, with all sectors expected to be included by the end of the current year. This announcement was made by Ziyad Al-Saadi, the head of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission.
Al-Saadi confirmed that the commission is working on defining the electricity tariff over a 24-hour period, where the tariff is based on consumption and peak periods. The announcement of the new tariff is expected within ten days.
He added that the first phase, starting in about a month, will include sectors such as electric vehicle charging, telecommunications, medium-sized industries, and extraction.
Objectives of the time-of-use tariff:
The time-of-use electricity tariff aims to reduce electricity bills, with it being optionally applied to some sectors in May of last year. The tariff is divided into three categories:
1. Peak hours from 5 PM to 11 PM.
2. Partial peak hours divided into two periods: from 2 PM to 5 PM and from 11 PM to 6 AM.
3. Off-peak hours from 6 AM to 2 PM.
Electric Vehicle Charging Sector:
Al-Saadi noted that the electric vehicle charging sector is subject to a fixed tariff of 115 fils per kilowatt. The time-of-use tariff has been optionally applied to this sector, with currently 54 operational charging stations and 350 stations under construction, including stations within hospitals and commercial complexes.
