Toyota and Sumitomo Partner for Mass Production of All-Solid-State EV Batteries

Toyota Motor Corporation and Sumitomo Metal Mining have announced a strategic agreement for the mass production of cathode materials specifically designed for All-Solid-State batteries. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in the future of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), focusing on enhancing battery life and increasing operational range.

Toyota's All-Solid-State Battery Launch Timeline

Toyota plans to introduce high-performance all-solid-state batteries to the market between 2027 and 2028. This technology stands out from traditional lithium-ion batteries due to:

  • Solid Electrolyte: Replaces liquid electrolytes, providing higher safety and efficiency.
  • Record Charging Times: Significantly faster charging speeds compared to current technologies.
  • Extended Driving Range: Higher energy storage capacity allows for longer distances on a single charge.

Research is also underway to apply these innovations to Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).

Sumitomo’s Role in Cathode Material Development

With over 20 years of expertise, Sumitomo has collaborated with Toyota since 2021 to develop an ultra-durable cathode material. Using its proprietary "powder synthesis" technology, the company addressed cathode degradation caused by repeated charging cycles, paving the way for the world's first use of these batteries in commercial vehicles.

Toyota’s Sales and the 2030 EV Future

Toyota Europe achieved record-breaking figures in 2025 with sales of 1.229 million vehicles, showing a significant increase in EV sales. By 2030, Toyota aims to:

  • Launch 30 all-electric models.
  • Achieve annual global sales of 3.5 million units.
  • Expand production through advanced facilities, such as the plant in the Czech Republic.

Dooz Guidance: Your Smart Investment in the 2026 Market

Amid the shift toward solid-state battery technologies, Dooz advises choosing electric vehicles based on technical quality rather than just appearance. Look for brands that guarantee long-term Battery Health and provide continuous software updates. Vehicles that maintain their energy efficiency today will experience the least depreciation in market value and will be the most sought-after in the used car market in the future.
