Egypt Launches First Locally Assembled Electric SUV: Dongfeng MAGE EV With Up to 45% Local Content

In a new step toward supporting Egypt’s electric vehicle industry, SN Automotive has announced the start of local production of the fully electric Dongfeng MAGE EV at El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company’s factories in Helwan. The vehicle is set to become the first fully electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) assembled locally in Egypt, according to the project announcement.
The official unveiling took place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, during an event attended by Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, alongside several officials from the industrial sector and representatives of the participating companies.
The project is part of a partnership between SN Automotive, Al Safi Group, and El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company. It aims to support the localization of electric vehicle manufacturing and make use of local industrial infrastructure and expertise, with the vehicle achieving a local content rate of up to 45%, according to the announced figures.
Egypt’s First Locally Assembled Electric SUV
The new vehicle is based on the MAGE EV model from Chinese automaker Dongfeng. It is being assembled at El Nasr Automotive’s factories in Helwan rather than being imported as a fully built electric vehicle.
The announced local content rate currently stands at 45%, while the companies involved in the project aim to increase this percentage in the coming stages and expand the localization of electric vehicle components, including batteries, electric motors, and related systems.
The project represents an extension of efforts to restart and develop El Nasr Automotive’s factories, while strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors and international partners in vehicle manufacturing.
It is important to distinguish between local assembly and full manufacturing. The vehicle is based on a Chinese Dongfeng model, while assembly operations take place in Egypt with a local content rate of up to 45%. This makes the project a step toward industrial localization rather than the complete domestic production of all vehicle components.
163 HP Electric Motor and a Range of Up to 445 km
The Dongfeng MAGE EV is powered by an electric motor mounted on the front axle, producing a maximum output of 163 hp and peak torque of 240 Nm, with a front-wheel-drive configuration.
The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, while its top speed reaches 140 km/h.
Power comes from a 50.82 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery equipped with a liquid-cooling system. The battery provides a claimed driving range of up to 445 km on a single charge, according to the Chinese CLTC test cycle.
The vehicle also supports fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes at room temperature. Its announced energy consumption rate is 12.8 kWh per 100 km.
It is worth noting that the CLTC range is based on a specific testing cycle and may differ from the actual driving range depending on usage conditions, weather, speed, and driving style.
Digital Interior and Comfort Technology
The interior features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, alongside a 10.4-inch high-definition central touchscreen, providing a digital interface for controlling vehicle functions and displaying driving information.
Other features include automatic climate control, an opening panoramic sunroof, sport seats, rear air-conditioning vents, and USB ports.
The vehicle is also equipped with a range of safety and driver-assistance systems, including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), adaptive cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, a rearview camera, and parking sensors, according to the published specifications.
Vehicle and Battery Warranty, and Market Launch
Regarding warranty coverage, SN Automotive has announced a vehicle warranty of up to 7 years or 300,000 km, in addition to a battery warranty extending to 10 years with no mileage limit.
The Dongfeng MAGE EV is scheduled to reach customers in the Egyptian market during the first quarter of 2027. However, the official final price and details of the available sales variants have not yet been announced.
A New Step Toward Localizing Electric Vehicle Manufacturing
The start of MAGE EV assembly represents another development in Egypt’s efforts to revive El Nasr Automotive and expand vehicle production at its factories through upgraded production lines and industrial partnerships.
Official statements accompanying the project’s launch highlighted the importance of increasing the local content rate in the coming stages and expanding domestic production of electric vehicle components, particularly batteries and electric motors. These efforts are intended to support a more integrated industrial base and create opportunities for technology and expertise transfer.
The project therefore goes beyond introducing a new electric vehicle to the Egyptian market. It marks the beginning of a new phase of locally assembling electric vehicles, with a gradual focus on increasing domestic manufacturing and strengthening Egypt’s capabilities in the electric mobility sector.
