Jordan’s fuel sector is witnessing a significant downturn as the rapid adoption of electric vehicles continues to reshape the local transportation landscape raising growing concerns among fuel station owners about the sector’s economic sustainability.

According to the head of the Fuel Stations Owners Association, Nahar Al-Saeedan, the sector is facing an unprecedented crisis due to a sharp drop in sales. He revealed that more than 30 stations have already shut down, around 50 are up for sale, and dozens of others are suffering serious financial difficulties. Al-Saeedan estimated that fuel sales have decreased by nearly 500 million liters annually, directly impacting company revenues and government tax income from fuel.

Observers confirm that the decline in fuel consumption has become a clear trend over the past two years, driven by the rising number of electric and hybrid vehicles in the kingdom, as well as other factors such as changing mobility patterns and increased environmental awareness. Official data also indicate a notable drop in fuel demand since the beginning of this year, reinforcing concerns that the sector’s contraction may continue in the coming period.

Energy experts note that the shift toward electric vehicles represents both a challenge and an opportunity. It compels the government and companies to reassess energy and transport policies, seeking balanced solutions that maintain the stability of the fuel market while supporting the transition toward cleaner energy.
