Stellantis was founded in January 2021 as a result of the alliance between PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), becoming one of the largest conglomerates in the automotive industry. Stellantis encompasses up to 18 specialized automotive brands, in addition to diverse services and products related to automobiles. Among the key brands under Stellantis are Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Maserati, Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Lancia, Opel, and Vauxhall.
Despite Stellantis' official plans to transition to 100% electric cars in Europe and 50% in the United States, the company has a contingency plan based on the outcomes of crucial elections in the United States and Europe next year.
During a press event at the company's factory in Italy, Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis, hinted that the company would closely monitor the results of the European Parliament elections and the U.S. presidential elections to make necessary decisions if political and public opinion leans towards fewer electric vehicles.
Tavares stated on the matter, "There are two important elections next year, the European Parliament elections in June, and the U.S. elections in November, and politics could be different after that." He added, "One of my tasks is to prepare the company for new emergency conditions, and we have plans in place for that."
It is worth noting that former U.S. President Donald Trump had repeatedly threatened to halt what he described as "crazy plans to support electric cars" if he were to be re-elected next year.
Despite the potential for Stellantis to alter its future plans due to shifting political dynamics, the company remains committed to a significant transition towards electric vehicles. This aligns with the European Union's decision to ban the sale of most internal combustion engine cars from 2035 and similar decisions by some U.S. states to gradually phase out internal combustion engine vehicle sales and trucks by 2035 as well.
This comes at a time when Stellantis is actively working to accelerate the transition to fully electric vehicles, especially with its STLA small, medium, and large platform and architecture, which will serve several brands within the large automotive group. Additionally, the company plans to launch a new low-cost platform to support small smart cars.
It is worth mentioning that manufacturing operations for the Stellantis group are currently conducted in approximately 30 countries, while the produced vehicles target consumers in over 130 markets worldwide. Will this statement have a significant impact on the global automotive market, or is it merely speculation?
