What to Do If an Earthquake Occurs While Driving

We all know that the best strategy for dealing with earthquakes is "shelter, cover, and hold on," and these steps are generally applied when inside buildings or in public places. But what if you're inside a car?

Here are the important steps to follow in case of an earthquake while driving:

The fundamental and general rule in the event of an earthquake is to remain calm, rational, and avoid panic and disturbance. Then, begin following these steps:

- If you feel the ground shaking while you're inside your vehicle, do not slam on the brakes suddenly; instead, gradually reduce your speed. This will prevent you from surprising other drivers and potentially causing accidents and traffic crises.

- Do not attempt to outrun the earthquake. While it may be tempting to try, no car can outpace the seismic waves, which can travel at speeds of up to 14 kilometers per second!

- Avoid driving over, under, or near bridges, buildings, power lines, large trees, and roads alongside canyons and beaches as much as possible. You can continue driving slowly and cautiously until you reach the nearest suitable location.

- Do not exit your vehicle or attempt to run outside. Any potential hazards that may occur while you are inside the vehicle will be multiplied when you are outside, except in cases of immediate danger to your safety inside the vehicle.

- If possible, get as low as possible inside the vehicle and cover your head by placing it between your arms. Stay in this position until the earthquake and aftershocks are over, and continue to follow local authorities' broadcasts and advice on the radio.
