The Russian luxury brand Aurus—famous for manufacturing the armored presidential vehicles for President Vladimir Putin—has taken a major strategic step into the mainstream luxury car market by officially unveiling its latest model, the Aurus Senat 900. The new car represents an unannounced software and technical alliance, as it relies entirely on the chassis and technologies of the Chinese luxury car Hongqi H9, but with a pure Russian touch and identity.

With this launch, Russia aims to fill the massive void left by the withdrawal of European luxury giants like Mercedes-Maybach and BMW, offering a premium alternative for large corporations and government procurement.

Exterior Design: The Familiar Aurus Face on a Chinese Body

Although the car is essentially a carbon copy of the Chinese Hongqi H9 in its core, sides, and rear, Russian engineers worked to distinguish it from the front:

• Front Fascia: The car features a completely new front end characterized by aggressiveness and luxury, with a massive chrome grille with vertical slats inspired directly by the historic identity of presidential Aurus vehicles.
• Lighting: The headlight design has been modified to look sharper and more formal compared to the donor Chinese version.
• Dimensions: The luxury sedan comes with an overall length of 5.14 meters, giving it a commanding presence on the road.

Powertrain and Performance: V6 Power and Standard AWD

The Aurus Senat 900 shares its beating heart with the Chinese manufacturer, delivering a balanced performance worthy of an executive car:

• Engine: 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder (V6).
• Horsepower: The engine produces 326 hp.
• Torque: Reaches 450 Nm.
• Transmission: An advanced 8-speed automatic.
• Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive (AWD) comes as standard, supported by an electronically controlled smart air suspension system to ensure maximum comfort levels.
• Acceleration: The car launches from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

Interior Cabin: An Oasis of Luxury and Nappa Leather

The Senat 900 cabin is available with two seating configuration options to meet the needs of different customers:

• Standard Version (5 seats): Provides spacious and highly comfortable areas for families and long trips.
• VIP Version (4 seats): Features two separate rear seats (Captain Chairs) separated by a luxurious center console.

The cabin is fully upholstered in premium, durable Nappa leather, complemented by genuine natural wood trims. The seats also come equipped with heating, ventilation (cooling), and multi-level massage programs to provide a ride experience akin to private jets.

Production Line and Prices: From Former Toyota Plants to the Markets

The car gains significant political and economic symbolism for Russia in terms of its manufacturing location; its actual production has begun inside the former Toyota factory located in the Shushari district of Saint Petersburg—a plant seized by the Russian government after the Japanese giant withdrew following the outbreak of the Ukrainian war.

Expected Prices: The car is available in the Russian market at a starting price of 12 million rubles for the standard version, which is approximately equivalent to $162,667, and rises to 12.5 million rubles for the premium VIP version. It is worth noting that a longer-wheelbase version is coming later under the name Senat 1000.
