After introducing the "5 E-Tech" model, Renault has once again showcased one of its modified historic vehicles. This time, it revealed a new classic car called the R17 Electric Restomod in collaboration with Ora Ito, developed by Renault's design teams in partnership with Ora Ito, a designer known for "hacking" brands with his innovative digital products.
The R17 Electric Restomod retains some of the original components of the classic R17, such as the doors, windows, and underbody, but it features a 270-horsepower electric motor and a fully redesigned dashboard. The model also preserves the original monocoque structure of the R17, along with its doors, windows, seals, and underbody, while increasing the car's width by 170 mm to improve road stability. It is now equipped with a carbon fiber chassis.
At the front, the car received new rectangular headlights instead of the classic round ones, maintaining the traditional yellow color in line with its French heritage. The rear lights have been transformed into a single light strip. The vehicle is powered by a new 270-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels.
Inside, the car features "retro-futuristic" touches, including a new central screen and four small geometric screens behind the steering wheel, inspired by the original dials. The seats are made of fine Merino wool with lightweight boucle wool accents, a design inspired by the world of interior design.
However, it is important to note that Renault has clarified that the R17 Electric Restomod in collaboration with Ora Ito is merely a design exercise and does not precede the production of a future model. The car will be displayed at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille event from September 12 to 15, 2024, before moving to Renault's stand at the Paris Motor Show from October 14 to 20, 2024.
