Volkswagen has officially unveiled the new ID.3 GTI, marking a new chapter for the iconic GTI nameplate with an all-electric sports car that uses rear-wheel drive for the first time in GTI history.

The global reveal took place on September 16, 2026, as Volkswagen celebrated 50 years of GTI, with the company describing the ID.3 GTI as the most powerful production GTI in Volkswagen’s history. Its electric powertrain produces 240 kW, or 326 PS (approximately 322 hp), along with 545 Nm of torque.

Volkswagen says the car will enter the pre-order phase in early 2027, with market launch scheduled for the first quarter of the same year. The vehicle currently on display remains a near-production concept vehicle and is not yet available for sale.

326 PS and Rear-Wheel Drive for the First Time in GTI History

The ID.3 GTI is powered by an APP550 electric motor mounted on the rear axle, producing 240 kW (326 PS) and a maximum torque output of 545 Nm.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission, making the ID.3 GTI the first Volkswagen GTI model in history to feature rear-wheel drive. This configuration gives the car a different power-delivery layout compared with traditional front-wheel-drive GTI models.

According to the currently announced figures, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, while top speed is limited electronically to 200 km/h.

Launch Control and GTI Performance Mode

Volkswagen has equipped the ID.3 GTI with a range of performance-focused technologies beyond its electric power and torque figures.

The car comes as standard with adaptive sports suspension featuring DCC, progressive direct steering, Launch Control, and a new GTI Mode.

The ID.3 GTI is equipped with a lithium-ion battery offering 79 kWh of usable capacity, with Volkswagen estimating a driving range of up to 601 km according to the WLTP cycle.

However, the company describes the range figure as an initial estimate at this stage, meaning the final figure could change once production specifications and official consumption figures are finalized.

Current preliminary efficiency figures stand at approximately 14.5 kWh/100 km.

10-80% Charging in 29 Minutes

The ID.3 GTI supports DC fast charging at up to 183 kW.

According to Volkswagen, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 29 minutes using a suitable DC fast charger. This figure is also preliminary at the current development stage.

This means the commonly circulated claim of “70% in half an hour” is broadly close to the official figure, although the more precise specification is 10-80% in approximately 29 minutes.

Design With Classic GTI Identity

Volkswagen has retained the iconic visual elements associated with the GTI range while giving them a new interpretation suited to an electric vehicle.

At the front, the ID.3 GTI features the familiar GTI red accents, along with IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights and a transparent light strip connecting the headlights, accompanied by an illuminated Volkswagen badge.

The car also receives a black honeycomb-style front grille with red elements inspired by motorsport, while the 20-inch Wörthersee wheels are among its most distinctive exterior features. They are fitted with 225-section tires, with 235-section tires also available as an option.

The vehicle is available in classic GTI-inspired colors, including Tornado Red, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver Metallic, Grenadilla Black Metallic, and Glacier White Metallic.

The Tornado Red color has been associated with GTI models since the earliest generations of the Golf GTI.

Sporty GTI-Inspired Interior

Inside, Volkswagen has focused on combining the traditional GTI identity with the latest ID.3 technology.

The cabin features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, alongside a 12.9-inch Innovision infotainment display, with both screens positioned along a common visual axis.

The interior also features premium sports seats with red stitching and a Tartan-inspired pattern, paying homage to the traditional fabric used in GTI models. A sporty steering wheel features the familiar red center marker at the 12 o’clock position.

Volkswagen is aiming to preserve the character of GTI rather than simply applying the name to an electric vehicle, which is why several systems interact when GTI Mode is activated.

The system adjusts electric motor response, progressive steering, and DCC suspension settings while also activating Launch Control. The car features dedicated GTI displays showing information such as power, speed, and lap times.

The ID.3 GTI also supports advanced everyday-driving technologies, including the latest generation of Connected Travel Assist. When the necessary data is available, the system can respond to traffic lights and support braking for red signals, in addition to offering one-pedal driving capability.

Optional Features for Everyday Use

Despite its sporty character, the ID.3 GTI remains designed for everyday usability.

Available optional equipment includes a panoramic roof, 360-degree Area View, sports seats with memory and massage functions, a Harman Kardon sound system, an augmented-reality Head-Up Display, and Park Assist Pro.

The car also offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing energy stored in the vehicle’s battery to power or charge external devices through an adapter connected to the charging port.

Volkswagen says this feature can be useful during trips, including for charging electric bicycles while on the move.
