Toyota recently announced the release of a new addition to the Crown family, the Crown Sport SUV, equipped with a hybrid powertrain generating 302 horsepower. Despite reports of its unavailability in several countries, notably the United States, Toyota continues its ambitious expansion, unveiling a new fully hybrid version for the esteemed Crown lineup, specifically the Crown Sport, in the Japanese market.
The new model, smaller than its larger sibling, the Crown Signia, boasts a bold design reminiscent of the Italian sports car Ferrari Purosangue, especially when adorned in its distinctive red color.
While the Toyota Crown Sport doesn't feature a V12 engine, it remains robust within the standards set by the Japanese company. The car combines a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering a total power of 302 horsepower distributed to all four wheels.
Toyota has dedicated significant efforts to enhance the plug-in hybrid version of this model, equipping it with improved front brakes featuring 20-inch discs and six-piston calipers. Additionally, paddle shifters behind the steering wheel offer a sportier driving experience, a feature less common in hybrid SUVs.
In terms of efficiency, the new model shines with its ability to travel up to 90 kilometers solely on electric power. It incorporates a compact lithium-ion battery located beneath the floor, which can be charged up to 80% in just 38 minutes. With a fuel tank capacity of 55 liters, the vehicle can cover a total distance exceeding 1,200 kilometers.
The car rides on large 21-inch black wheels with wider tires and features an adaptive suspension with modified shock absorbers. Toyota emphasizes that the Crown Sport Hybrid PHEV provides a "stable and reassuring" driving experience.
Among its unique features in this category is bidirectional charging support, allowing the external power supply function with a power of 1,500 watts (AC 100V) to be useful in emergencies. It can also power a variety of devices, catering to outdoor enthusiasts. The Crown Sport PHEV is priced at 7,650,000 Japanese yen, approximately $52,900, and Toyota anticipates selling around 300 units monthly.
