China Surpasses Japan to Become the World's Largest Car Exporter

China has ascended to the position of the world's largest exporter of automobiles, surpassing Japan in the first three months of 2023, according to an official announcement by the Chinese government last week. Official figures indicate that China shipped 1.07 million cars during this period, marking a 58% increase compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, the total exports of Japanese cars reached 954,185 vehicles, showing a 6% increase compared to the previous year. The report suggests that China has particularly strengthened its position by meeting the growing demand for electric cars and boosting sales in the Russian market.

Moreover, China exceeded Germany to become the second-largest exporter of cars globally last year, according to information from the General Administration of Customs in China. China's total car exports reached 3.2 million vehicles in 2022, while German exports amounted to 2.6 million cars.

These achievements come amid China's shift towards manufacturing alternative energy vehicles, with a notable surge of over 90% in electric car exports in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year. "SAIC," Tesla's subsidiary in China, shines as one of the leading exporters of new electric vehicles.

With a massive factory in Shanghai, Tesla can currently produce 1.25 million cars annually and has plans to expand its production capacity. The company has recently commenced the production of sports cars of the "Y" model with the aim of exporting them to Canada.

China has also witnessed an increase in its exports to Russia, following trade sanctions imposed on Moscow due to the Ukrainian crisis. Chinese automotive companies like "Geely," "Chery," and "Great Wall" have experienced a rise in their market share in Russia, as key competitors such as Volkswagen and Toyota withdrew from the market due to events in Ukraine.
