Haval, a subsidiary of China's Great Wall Motors specializing in SUV production, has announced the surprising and enticing launch of its new model, the H5, into the Chinese market.
The new Haval H5 shares its chassis with the "King Kong Cannon" truck from Great Wall, which explains the visual similarities between them. The H5 stands out with a different front grille design featuring chrome details, rounded wheel arches, and a closed rear design.
One of the most noticeable changes in this new model is its larger internal combustion engines, clearly placing it in the category of larger SUVs. Additionally, its price is exceptionally competitive, starting at 122,800 yuan (approximately 16,830 US dollars), making it one of the most affordable vehicles in this category on the market.
According to Chinese reports, the new H5 measures 5,190 mm (204.3 inches) in length, 1,905 mm (75 inches) in width, 1,833 mm (72.2 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,140 mm (123.6 inches). This means that the new model is 540 mm (21.3 inches) longer than its predecessor.
Despite its larger dimensions, the Haval H5 comfortably accommodates only five passengers. This sets it apart from the H9 model, which is shorter in length and offers options for seating five or seven passengers.
Power options include a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing either 188 or 215 horsepower, as well as a turbocharged diesel engine producing 164 horsepower.
The new H5 comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic transmission, with power delivered to the rear wheels in the standard version, while a four-wheel-drive system is available for high-spec versions.
The vehicle offers ample cargo space, with the rear cargo area expanding to 2,116 liters (74.7 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down, allowing it to be converted into a camping area.
The dashboard features a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, synthetic leather upholstery, and aluminum accents, adding a touch of luxury to the interior.
As for equipment options, the standard rear-wheel-drive version without a touchscreen display is priced at 122,800 yuan (16,830 US dollars). However, it comes equipped with front airbags, rear parking sensors, cruise control, and a four-speaker sound system.
The high-spec version, priced at 157,800 yuan (21,633 US dollars), includes standard four-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, software updates, exterior cameras, and a six-speaker sound system.
If you're looking for the top-of-the-line Haval H5, it's available for 167,800 yuan (23,004 US dollars) with the addition of Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, and a rear axle lock suitable for off-road use.
Great Wall Motors has not yet disclosed whether the Haval H5 will be offered in markets outside of China, but we will provide you with the latest updates as soon as they become available.
