Jordan Leads Electric Vehicle Sales in the Middle East

The International Energy Agency reported that Jordan achieved the highest share of electric vehicle sales in the Middle East, with over 45% of total electric vehicle sales in the region last year. This success is partly attributed to significantly lower import duties on electric vehicles compared to fuel-powered cars. The United Arab Emirates followed with a 13% share.

Global Growth in Electric Vehicle Sales

The agency noted that nearly 14 million new electric vehicles were registered worldwide in 2023, bringing the total number of electric vehicles on the roads to 40 million. This represents an increase of 3.5 million vehicles compared to 2022, reflecting a 35% year-on-year growth.

Significant Increase Compared to Previous Years

The agency highlighted that electric vehicle sales in 2023 were more than six times higher than in 2018, showcasing substantial growth over just five years.

Concentration in Key Markets

Despite the global rise in electric vehicle sales, these sales remain heavily concentrated in a few key markets. In 2023, China accounted for 60% of new electric vehicle registrations, followed by Europe with nearly 25%, and the United States with 10%. These three regions collectively accounted for about 95% of total sales.

Increasing Proportion of Electric Vehicles in Total Sales

Electric vehicles constituted approximately 18% of all cars sold in 2023, up from 14% in 2022 and just 2% five years ago in 2018.

Continued Growth in 2024

Electric vehicle sales maintained their strong momentum in the first quarter of 2024, surpassing the sales of the same period in 2023 by about 25%, reaching over 3 million vehicles. This growth rate matches the increase recorded in the same period of 2023 compared to 2022.
