Mercedes Confirms Readiness to Introduce the New Compact Version of the G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has officially announced its plan to introduce a new model in the Mercedes "Small G-Class" series. This announcement was made during an event held to launch the new electric test version of the Mercedes CLA before the start of the IAA 2023 Munich Motor Show on Sunday evening.

Meet the new Mercedes CLA

Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes, confirmed the development of an entirely new version of the small G-Class. Amid the events of the Munich Motor Show, Mercedes unveiled a conceptual image of this car in the background and named it "Little G," emphasizing that it will be equipped with electric motors.

It's worth noting that this new small car must be fully capable of handling rugged terrains just like its larger sibling. Recent reports from Germany have indicated that this new car will be launched in 2026, using the same advanced electric MMA platform that was used in the new electric CLA model unveiled at the Munich Motor Show this week. Although the MMA platform is not exclusively designed for electric cars, Mercedes intends to utilize it for hybrid vehicles as well. This implies the possibility of offering the new version of the G-Class with conventional internal combustion engines coupled with advanced hybrid systems alongside pure electric motors.

Unfortunately, a specific release date for the small G-Class has not been disclosed, but it is believed that it won't be available for at least another two years. The head of Mercedes emphasizes that this project will be a significant challenge, given the popularity of the current G-Class model, and the necessity to preserve the spirit and luxury of the compact version.
