Traffic Department Activates AI-Based System to Detect Mobile Phone Violations While Driving

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing accidents caused by driver distraction, Jordan’s Central Traffic Department has announced the official launch of an advanced surveillance system powered by artificial intelligence. This system is designed to automatically detect and record violations related to mobile phone usage while driving, without the need for direct human intervention.

The newly activated system utilizes image analysis technology through cameras installed on public roads. It can accurately identify mobile phone usage, whether through voice calls, text messaging, or app browsing. The AI software is capable of analyzing the driver's hand positions and facial orientation to precisely detect violations in real time.

The Traffic Department emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader national plan to integrate modern technology into the traffic management infrastructure. It also pointed out that mobile phone use while driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents due to cognitive distraction and delayed reaction times.

Meanwhile, Eng. Sultan Al-Kharabsheh, Executive Director of Information Technology at the Greater Amman Municipality, clarified that no official tenders have yet been issued for installing AI-enabled monitoring cameras. He added that such technologies are subject to specific technical standards and requirements that must be met prior to wide-scale implementation.

This development aligns with the government’s ongoing digital transformation efforts across various sectors, including transportation, aiming to establish a safer and more technologically advanced traffic environment that meets international standards.
