Artificial intelligence inside tires and new technologies developed by Michelin

Michelin introduces its new SmartWear system and enters the artificial intelligence race in tire technology, aiming to enhance vehicle safety, data security, and privacy.
Artificial intelligence is no longer limited to vehicles alone—it has now reached tires as well. Michelin is set to unveil this technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas next month. Thanks to this innovation, tires will be able to “think,” autonomously monitoring their own wear and providing detailed, real-time information about their condition.
The company announced that the new system is capable of analyzing multiple vehicle signals—such as braking intensity, vehicle load, cornering forces, and more—to deliver highly accurate assessments of tire condition. The system was developed in partnership with technology company Sonatus and operates under the names SmartLoad and SmartWear. Michelin estimates that these innovations could generate global savings of up to $1.68 billion by 2030.
What happens to the data, and where is it stored?
Michelin stated that the system works seamlessly with Sonatus Collector AI, and that all data is stored directly within the vehicle itself rather than on any cloud servers. The system can also be configured to suit different types of vehicles.
Ali Rziki, Vice President of Tire Digital Twin at Michelin, said:
“SmartLoad and SmartWear demonstrate how we transform our expertise in tire physics and modeling into clear predictive insights.
These solutions help automakers and fleets extend tire lifespan, improve safety, reduce costs, and support sustainable mobility.
SmartWear and SmartLoad represent the first building blocks of an integrated portfolio that will enable OEMs to have a digital twin of tires within their vehicles.”
Real-world performance experience
The two companies will showcase the technology at CES using a 1970 Ford Bronco equipped with smart tires. Attendees will be able to monitor tire data and health in real time through Michelin’s dedicated MyTires application.
